Understanding Army Body Fat Standards

The U.S. Army uses the circumference-based tape test method to estimate body fat percentage for soldiers who exceed weight screening tables. This method is part of the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) outlined in AR 600-9.

Measurement Formulas

Males:

%BF = 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76

Females:

%BF = 163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387

Measurement Instructions

Neck Measurement

Measure at the narrowest point of the neck, just below the larynx (Adam's apple). The tape should be perpendicular to the long axis of the neck. Round up to the nearest half inch.

Waist Measurement (Males and Females)

Measure at the natural waist, at the level of the navel (belly button). Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor. Round up to the nearest half inch.

Hip Measurement (Females Only)

Measure at the widest point of the hips/buttocks. Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor. Round up to the nearest half inch.

Proper Technique

  • Use a non-elastic tape measure
  • Take measurements over bare skin or thin clothing
  • Ensure tape is snug but not compressing tissue
  • Take measurements at least twice for accuracy
  • Soldier should stand at attention during measurement
  • Record measurements to nearest half inch

Consequences of Exceeding Standards

  • Enrollment in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP)
  • Mandatory weight control counseling
  • Monthly weigh-ins and tape tests
  • Potential bar to reenlistment
  • Ineligibility for promotion or attendance at professional schools
  • Possible administrative separation after 6 months

Tips for Meeting Standards

  • Maintain a consistent exercise routine (cardio and strength training)
  • Follow a balanced, calorie-appropriate diet
  • Get adequate sleep (7-9 hours)
  • Stay hydrated
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Monitor progress regularly

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the results?
The Army Body Fat applies a standard formula to your inputs — accuracy depends on how precisely you measure those inputs. For planning and estimation, results are reliable. For high-stakes or professional decisions, cross-check the output with a domain expert or primary source.
Is this result a medical diagnosis?
No — this calculator provides a population-based screening metric, not a diagnosis. A result outside the normal range is a prompt to discuss with a healthcare provider, not a medical finding. Individual health depends on many factors beyond what any single number captures.
How should I interpret the Army Body Fat output?
The result is a calculated estimate based on the formula and your inputs. Compare it against the reference values or benchmarks shown on this page to understand whether your result is high, low, or typical. For decisions with real consequences, use the output as one data point alongside direct measurement and professional advice.
When should I use a different approach?
Use this calculator for quick, formula-based estimates. If your situation involves multiple interacting variables, time-varying inputs, or safety-critical decisions, consider a dedicated software tool, professional consultation, or direct measurement. Calculators are most reliable within their stated assumptions — check that your scenario matches those assumptions before relying on the output.
